Position Paper 1:

France 24: Online News

France 24 launched in October of 2006 and is owned by the french government. They broadcast and publish stories in four different languages including French, English, Spanish, and Arabic. Their website when you launch pulls up top stories with full coverage and a list of clickable links to live news. It breaks it down into by the hour coverage to give users a full experience. For example I've included a direct screenshot from their home screen to show their timeline of events. The special coverage the site is covering is "France holds national day of mourning, final memorial service for Chirac" with live videos and updates. The site also created a web document showing the world of Jacques Chirac with loads of interactivity. It has links to all of his work with different places around the globe like Europe, the Middle east, the pacific, Africa, etc... They also covered when the Prime minister came and visited their studio in December of 2006 when they began broadcasting. He discussed how he saw potential for France 24 to eventually be a French version of CNN. There is also a way for you to tweet directly and share to your Facebook about a specific article you read. I also noticed that the website shows how many people have shared the article you are reading. Taking the site in the right direction in a social media driven age.

When reading the articles if you scroll to the bottom of the page the site works with Smartfeed which uses the users information to recommend articles for them to look towards after finishing up the previous. At the bottom of their articles they also have clickable tags related to the article above. For example, the article about the death of former prime minister Jacques Chirac there were tags to click on that would bring up article that dealt with any past work of his and a tag to pull up his obituary. At the very top of their home screen they have a button that will pull up the current live feed of the broadcast. The article then has tabs that cover topics specifically related to France. The tab covers news articles and even short films like "Mia Farrow on World Hunger" which covers her traveling the world helping those in need and providing coverage on important topics. The overall topic is the Eye on Africa a popular segment on the site in the France section discussing malnutrition and extreme hunger throughout Africa. There is also a link to follow the specific segment and post about this topic on twitter. All their live videos and broadcast are saved and accessible through youtube as well. The site gives biographies on all broadcasters and publishers with access to all editions. They post Monday through Friday as this is a very popular section of their broadcasts and articles. There is also a section for the news stories in Africa, Middle East, Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The coverage on the Africa tab is also covering a important public figures death for special coverage. The top coverage is Robert Mugabe's private funeral and how his legacy will live on forever in Zimbabwe.

The world we live in today is heavily reliant on social media, which is why France 24 is seeing more success. The site has links to their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Daily Motion, and even Soundcloud. They post to their Facebook and Twitter feeds the most out of their social media. However, they do keep up with their Instagram incase you didn't know Instagram has the ability now to have highlights on your main profile for viewers to see instead of them disappearing after 24 hours. They have highlights covering News, Special Reports, French Co+, Sports, D-Day, and Tech24. Their Youtube account does the same thing in a more informational way. They post full broadcasts and even their short film clips to make them more accessible to the viewers.
